It is too ingrained and many of those coming home would bring it with them.

Killing is meaningless in America today. You have been brainwashed by every media outlet to accept it as normal. Only when it serves some purpose for the Elite do you hear about it in the news. There averages 90 murders a day in the US, 100 auto deaths, and who knows how many from drugs and other unnatural causes yet you never hear about them. And this is not new. It has been going on for decades. Just putting it into perspective.

Re: names

He got 6 weeks in Juvie. I don't know what happened to him later - if he got into more trouble with other crimes. I do know it was supposed to be taken off of his record by the time he was 18. He's probably about 18 now. Oh, and that 6 weeks - by the time the judge decided he'd get 6 weeks, he was let go right away since they applied time served.

Re: names

Gardenernorcal....Thanks, that worked.

Re: names

Perhaps they are. I think the two-page spread from the newspaper at the top of this thread asks the pertinent question. As for the answer? Can a nation be psychotic? I'm sure people in the rest of the world DO wonder, really, what IS wrong with the USA? Were you in truth a bastion of, a flag-carrier, a model for civil secular democratic society, 'OF the people, BY the people, FOR the people'? If we are what we eat (read, watch, are fed), then surely the diet needs to be examined.
But how can the symbiotic self-serving juggernaut Pentagon/Business/Hollywood/Advertising/Consumerism nightmare be stopped? Or even slowed? I'm sure I don't know.
Successive Australian governments have followed the lead of the US into various war quagmires, past and current. Many of us here are not proud of this, and continue to speak out in protest. Unfortunately we also have duopoly in our political system, Tweedeldum and Tweedeldumber, which makes it difficult. Capitalist/Imperialist running dogs was Mao's description of states like Australia. Perhaps MLK best described the US as "...the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today." And that was in 1967. Who knows what he might say today?
One thinks of Imperial Rome, at the apparent height of power just before the dissolution, strutting and fretting abroad spreading 'Pax Romana' among the heathen lesser races (extracting tribute all the while), meantime decaying at the core, corrupt and venal and bloodthirsty with bread and circuses (replaced today by TV?) keeping the mobilus vulgaris occupied. It wasn't safe on the streets there either.
Vulnerable people, saturated in violence, brought up on a diet of 'effective violence' (where the 'good guys' win) are very liable to flip out it seems, cross the line into psychosis, grab hold of the nearest weapon and attack the nearest people, fearful, vengeful, frustrated and angry. Perhaps they are modelling the behaviours they've seen thousands of times in movies, on TV, in those ghastly obscenely violent video games...

Re: names

Firstly, 'here' is the etheric cloudspace of the internet, as close as my keyboard, and I've been following threads on this site and others, Znet and Counterpunch to name but two for quite a long time. We're surprisingly literate downunder. As for the devils? The Tasmanian Devil is a rare and wonderful creature, somewhat noisy, and an endangered species, prone to a kind of mouth cancer. There are some disease-free populations though. The Tasman Peninsula (wherein sits Port Arthur, scene of an horrific mass killing of children and adults in 1996, prompting serious gun control in Australia) is one such. That's more information than you really wanted probably...

Re: names

Thanks, Revier...Even the public tax supported library banns some political books. You have the option of selecting 'newest' or 'oldest' or 'best'. If that doesn't work, then you've got a problem, but not with Disqus. It could be your browser (I've ditched the newest Firefox for an older version.) You have to do a little work sometimes, but then when you've learned how to do this and that you can also help others. And you'll feel good about a job well done.

Re: names

Thanks for taking the time to read it. I've gotten quite used to it (and keep a Disqus link in my bookmarks toolbar for easy, quick access to my multiple discussions). When I didn't like something, I squawked loudly, hoping they'd hear. I try never to squawk in isolation. Use group pressure. If others see you're going through what they are going through (but saying nothing to anyone about), then you give them the power to speak up and suddenly there's pressure where there was none.

I don't know about the company. It's early days. Remember Google?

This commenting feature is actually pretty user friendly. You'll see little buttons and whatnot at the top of every Disqus powered discussion. You can choose, easily, to have the discussion appear with the oldest comments first (my pref) or best (my ego just counts 'likes' on my individual posts rather than 'best' - which is a feature I can live without actually - but I focus on good composition and trying to know what I'm talking about more, likes or no likes). You can choose to have it appear with the 'best' on top or 'newest'. Always read your screen. Granted, geeks can sometimes be antisocial and present us with overly mystifying products in order to make us look stupid ("You don't know that? We do!") I don't have a cure for geekism. And I'm reduced to calling myself a geek when it comes to indie coffee because anything else (expert, connoisseur) sounds pretentious. ;-)

Always read your screen when in doubt. It's work and when your anxious to just function, it can be a pain, but the answer's often right there in front of you.

By the way, So far I have found the Disqus people to be not bad. The one time I emailed them to comlain about something, they promptly responded. They do have a help section, which I linked to in my bookmarks toolbar, but haven't needed since. Hope I was helpful. Good luck. http://help.disqus.com/

Re: names

You are coming perilously close to blaming the victims..

Re: names

Can anyone explain Discus???
