disqus shenanigans continue........Well once again i am sending this comment that for some bizarre disqus reason has been posted and then deleted twice. So.....................
Indeed, serenidade. i know a reserve soldier in the IDF (i've never been to Israel) who has over the years gone thru changes and now, as a photojournalist covering peaceful Palestinian protests in the West Bank, gets teargassed by Israeli soldiers and border police. Contrary to their own regulations, the soldiers and police shoot straight at photojournalists. This man i know has meanwhile been making Palestinian friends, and has realized that it is only when we connect with the "other" that we can see that s/he is the same as ourselves.

well i am certainly getting frustrated with this disqus game. i have erased via edit the comment that was here because it belongs higher up, after serenidade's first comment, but disqus wouldn't let me delete it. i have moved it back where it belongs and was happily situated two days ago.

Thank you for sharing his story--I will be sure to check out his photographs. The perspective on the ground is so very important, and seeing how mainstream journalism is essentially a joke (CNN closing its investigative desk, etc.) the observations of courageous, independent journalists are crucial.

well i don't know what is going on with disqus, as my comment in response to serenidade which had been here for a day and had many approvals has disappeared. this happened after i edited the comment by adding a paragraph on to it. fortunately i think i have copies of the comment and the paragraph, and i will attempt to reinsert them here.

the photojournalist i mentioned in comment to serenidade is my nephew Mati Milstein. I asked for, and got, his permission to post some stuff about him. He has just had a book published called "My New Middle East: Inside the Israeli Conundrum." He also has a website of his many photos, matimilstein.com, and another called matimilstein/aboutme. CORRECTION, that should be matimilstein.com/aboutme. plus if you just google his name you will get many sites which are primarily articles that he has written for various news sources. he also uses facebook, twitter, myspace, etc. as you will see.

I have gotten in touch with the photojournalist i referred to in my comment to serenidade to find out if I could post some information about him, to which he replied "sure." He happens to be my nephew, Mati Milstein. He has recently published a book about his experiences in Israel and the West Bank which trace his evolution over the decade. It is called "My New Middle East: Inside the Israeli Conundrum." He also has a website of his photographs, matimilstein.com, and one about himself, "matimilstein.com/aboutme". And if you google his name you can get many of the articles he has written.

I know there are many, many Jews internationally--and in Israel--that agree that this occupation is genocide, apartheid, and are active in protest. Pure and simple. It means a great deal to know that (of course!) there are passionate, compassionate people everywhere!

as a Canadian Jew i feel almost sick to my stomach seeing this photograph of humanity vs. the arrogant injustice of Israeli power.
